TFibroid
tumors, a noncancerous growth of the uterus, are very common in
women. Most time they go unnoticed, but sometimes can cause real
discomfort. Uterine fibroids can cause very heavy menstrual bleeding,
abdominal distension or pelvic pain.
In the past symptoms have been controlled with medication to shrink
the fibroid. Another treatment is surgery to remove only the fibroid,
maintaining the uterus, or if necessary, surgically removing the
uterus by performing a hysterectomy.
A
third option of containing uterine fibroid discomfort is now
available through an interventional radiology procedure, called
Uterine Fibroid Embolization. This minimally invasive treatment
simply blocks the blood supply to the uterine fibroid, (embolization)
causing the fibroid, without a blood supply, to shrink and disappear.
This is a same day admission procedure with an overnight hospital
stay. The embolization procedure is generally well tolerated
and the patient can return to full activity in less than five
days. There is even the potential for the preservation of fertility
for those desiring a pregnancy. |

are required to be referred to this service by their Gynecologist
